FINE 229 Project 2: Artist Statement
My name is Ananta Tandon, and I am currently enrolled as an arts and business student, pursuing a major in studio art at the University of Waterloo. I identify myself as an innovative artist that likes to challenge myself with unique ideas and materials. My practice consists of many mixed media acrylic paintings, as experimenting and challenging myself with new mediums is something that interests me. Hence, I do not have one specific medium that I always use, but rather I like to consistently originate new ideas to create something that stands out from the crowd.
For this piece in particular, I chose to create a stop motion video of a Parisian street scene. This was a new experience for me, and I learned many new things and diversified my skills as an artist. My primary focus was to capture the beauty of the city lights through the transition from day to night. In addition, I wanted to demonstrate that our memory of a certain place is accompanied by many overlapping sounds, not just one. I experimented with overlapping sounds in addition to the pictures, to create a sense of actually being in Paris.
To summarize, I used the notion of light movement and sounds to make the viewer feel as if they are a part of the scene themselves.
